Computers in the Workplace
In the world of Law Enforcement and based on my military law enforcement experience, computers, and information technology are a requirement. Military Police employ various systems to document incidents, share information, and gather intelligence. Examples include the National Crime Information Center (NCIC), a vital tool for sharing real-time information, and digital forensics and training simulation systems. One of the key instances of technological progress is the Air Force's transition from the Security Forces Management Information System (SFMIS) to the Air Force Justice Information System (AFJIS), a sign that there is an attempt to be more integrated and practical with an improved system from the previous generation. Officers must effectively access data from databases such as NCIC and AFJIS, analyze information, and use digital communication tools. The inability to use computers causes mistakes and substandard investigations. Additionally, cybersecurity knowledge is vital for safeguarding sensitive information. Adaptability is also essential because officers must keep learning new systems to stay ready. Looking ahead in the next 10 years, I see even more profound changes driven by advances in artificial intelligence (AI). Crime analysis and forecasting software based on AI will continue to become more powerful, allowing law enforcement agencies to anticipate and neutralize threats before they happen proactively. Advanced surveillance tools like drones with sophisticated sensors and face recognition capabilities will provide unprecedented situational awareness, particularly in large-scale security operations. However, their deployment will also create significant ethical and legal issues relating to privacy and civil liberties, which must be thoughtfully weighed and exercised responsibly. We can also anticipate having to contend with progressively more sophisticated cybersecurity threats, requiring the creation of new defenses and specialized talent to fight cybercrime. Ultimately, the ability to effectively employ these technologies will need to be mindful of public safety and law enforcement in the ever-evolving field of military law enforcement.
